Travis Ellis was introduced to the equine world at the ripe old age of one. Most children learn to walk first, but he learned to ride a horse. Raised on a one hundred acre farm in Portland, Tennessee is where Travis first learned about the care and training of the horse from his grandfather. As a youngster he was taught how to maintain the mental, physical and overall wellness of a horse in any type of training. “This was the most influential time period of my life in reference to the wellbeing of a healthy horse”, says Travis. The second phase of his career began in his early teens as a barrel racer. It was during this time that he began to ponder what more could be done with a horse and how he could further develop his horsemanship to benefit these exceptional animals. He had been exposed his entire young life to the many portals a horse could offer a human but soon realized that neither horse racing nor rodeos were where his talents belonged. It wasn’t long before he found the place and the life he had been searching for. He was introduced to Western Pleasure horses and the show horse outlet. He now knew that he was closer than ever to his dream of living in a perfect horse world. Not only was he learning to care for a horse on a physical level, but was also learning the art of developing an inner relationship with the horses he was training. He realized that without becoming one with the horse, the rider cannot understand him nor will the horse comprehend what its rider is asking of him. It was at this point in his life that he found his niche in the world of the horse. In the spring of 2009 world-renowned movie horse wrangler, Rex Peterson set up shop at the Anderson family’s Thoroughbred racehorse ranch to train horses for the Disney feature film, Secretariat hitting theaters in the fall of 2010. He played a role in the movie and accompanied Rex as a wrangler on the movie set. During the filming of this movie at Keeneland Racetrack and Churchill Downs is where Rex began teaching Travis the basic techniques of trick horse training. Although Travis was given the opportunity to have a small acting role in this movie but he now knew that training trick horses was his destiny. After wrapping up the movie in November Rex gave Travis his trust to represent his company’s name, Swanson Peterson Productions for film and television productions in the entire Southeastern U.S. JML Farms is proud to be the official representative for Travis Ellis and CTE Specialty Horses.
